Hydraulic oil is a different lubes than others.Hydraulic oil is the type of non compressible fluid and used to transfer power into the hydraulic machinery. Hydraulic oil is made to prevent corrosion, oxidation, wear and forming. Hydraulic system should be clean with high quality and anti-wear hydraulic oils. Pumps and valves surgical pressure produce metal to metal contact if no anti-wear protection available.

Hydraulic oil are classified into main three types

Flame retardant hydraulic oil: Petroleum based hydraulic oil may have risk of fire or ignition. Water glycol system and phosphoric acid ester system known for use in aircraft are available. Seal packing,paints and special material used depending on the type of hydraulic oil.

General hydraulic oil: Hydraulic oil are most commonly used in industrial hydraulic machines. Shear stability of viscosity, anti friction characteristics and stability is perfect for hydraulic machinery.

Wear resistance hydraulic oil: Hydraulic oil used in hydraulic machines at high pressure with high temperature. It is equipped or set up with a grill that’s why it prevents wear.

Checking optimum viscosity range

  1. First collect the relevant information of the pump manufacturer. This data can be the optimum operating characteristics provided by the manufacturer.
  • Here minimum viscosity 13 cST
  • Maximum viscosity 54 cST
  • Optimum viscosity 23 cST
      2.Second one is the operating temperature in the normal condition of the pump. Normally pump              operates at 92ºC
  1. Should collect the data of fluid temperature viscosity characteristics. Recommended ISO viscosity range is between 32 cST at 40ºC and 5.1 cST at 100 ºC

Characteristics of standard hydraulic fluid

  • Possible density should be lowest
  • Low flammability
  • Ageing stability
  • Viscosity range should not too much low
  • Ability to form lubricating film.
  • Good viscosity temperature and pressure properties
  • Good Water separable properties
  • Corrosion and wear protection capabilities

Hydraulic oil ISO VG

VG indicates the hydraulic oil thickness or weight. If your oil is more thicker the VG number will be increased. And for lower thicker hydraulic oil VG number will be decreased.

Here is the common hydraulic oil ISO grades is listed below:

Hydraulic oil ISO 15: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 15 and Usually used to operate power steering system and braking system.

Hydraulic oil ISO 22: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 22 used in air tools in Airlines.

Hydraulic oil ISO 32: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 32 used to hydraulic system in high power applications.

Hydraulic oil ISO 46: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 64 used in industrial high pressure applications.

Hydraulic oil ISO 68: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 68 used in large load carrying capabilities applications.

Hydraulic oil ISO 100: This hydraulic oil naming as ISO VG 100 used in industrial heavy loaded machineries.

Application of hydraulic oil

Marine industry: For stabilisers many marine vessels use hydraulic oil. Stabilisers purpose used hydraulic oil to maintain the balance of ship’s and reduce the amount of roll.

Tractors: Tractors used hydraulic oil for the operation of the brake system. Also tractor use hydraulic oil to move wheels through hydraulic pumps to run it in the farmland and muddy lands.

Aircraft: It is most essential to use hydraulic oil to control the aviation system,aircraft jacks and doors.

Skid steers: Skid steers use hydraulic oil to complete the operation of hydraulic systems. Hydraulic oil plays an important role to the skid steers to provide power to the wheels.

Automotive lifts: Automotive lifts need hydraulic oil to retain the maximum power range. Reliable hydraulic fluid provides better performance to this type of machine.

Forklift: Forklift hydraulic system used hydraulic oil to lift heavy loads with the fork. This in-compressible hydraulic fluid plays an important role to the forklift hydraulic system.

When does it need to change hydraulic oil to the system 

There are some factors depend on changing hydraulic oil to the system which are application, oil temperature, work cycle and the friction created into the system components.
